About University of the Witwatersrand

The University of the Witwatersrand is a highly-recognised university with excellent standards of research, academic leadership and commitment to social justice. It was founded in 1896 as the South African School of Mines in Kimberley and is now the third-oldest operating university in the country. The university interacts on a regular basis with the community to bring about meaningful changes.  The University of Witwatersrand has over 50 active projects around Africa and is the founder of the African Research Universities Alliance. This is a network of universities which help to improve research and training. The research conducted by students has been published in respected international journals.  The university hosts many events for students which help to enrich their lives on the campus. Some of these events include plays and readings by popular South African thought-leaders. These events help to encourage creative thinking in students which will help them in the modern world after studying.
