Description
The Sol Plaatje University is based in Kimberley and was established in 2014 with a student body of only 135 members. It is the first university to be established in the Northern Cape province. Since its inception, it has grown significantly. It is a niche university and focuses on the needs of the students in the context of the Northern Cape province.
The institution focuses on ICT and data science, heritage studies, paleo-sciences and creative writing in African languages. All of these maintain the African roots of the university. The campus architecture reflects this mindset by showcasing the culture of the area. The motto, “Light from Africa – for humanity,” is one of inspiration for students and staff.
This young university is working towards creating courses that are future-focused and relevant to the province. This includes agricultural programmes which focus on water-stressed conditions. One of the goals of this university is to develop an institution that is attractive to students and staff countrywide. This will help to build the economy of the Northern Cape.
